Big rebel offensive greets US envoy in El Salvador

Fred Ikle, US undersecretary of defense for political affairs, conferred with Salvadoran leaders and US personnel here on a major guerrilla offense in the three-year-old civil war.

Shortly after his arrival Wednesday night, rebels blacked out parts of San Salvador with six bomb attacks in the space of 10 minutes.
