Weinberger says US will send artillery to Lebanon

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said Thursday the United States will send artillery and armored personnel carriers to Lebanon to beef up Lebanon's armed forces, and he pledged military, economic, and other assistance to that war-torn country.

Mr. Weinberger indicated there were no current plans to bolster the size of the US Marine force in Lebanon beyond the 1,200 troops already committed as part of the multinational peacekeeping force.
