US supports Argentina in UN Falklands debate

The United States, which supported Britain in the Falkland Islands conflict, declared backing for Argentina and other Latin American countries in the General Assembly Falklands debate.

After debate began, Britain rejected a proposal by Argentina and 19 other Latin American countries urging the Assembly to call on the two opponents to resume negotiations about the islands' future. A US spokesman said the US would back the proposal, due to be voted on today (Nov.4). There was no official British comment on the US decision.
