Iraq claims it's won war, while Iran reports gains
| Amman, Jordan
Iraq said its forces Thursday left no survivors on the battlefields of Iran's latest offensive of the 26-month-old Persian Gulf War, and Baghdad's foreign minister said the Iranian defeat meant the conflict was virtually over.
Iran said its forces repulsed the Iraqi counterattack and that its forces had regained 210 square miles of Iraqi-occupied territory and retaken heights on the international border, enabling them to strike at large areas in eastern Iraq. Iranian Prime Minister Hossein Mousavi said the latest offensive would have a wide political effect on the region.
