New claims for jobless aid take an upward turn

New claims for jobless benefits climbed 56,000 for the week that ended Nov. 20, reaching 654,000 people asking for unemployment checks for the first time, the Labor Department said. The increase was the first in five weeks and the largest surge in claims since the total hit a record 10 weeks earlier.
