President Marcos closes opposition newspaper

Philippine police, acting on direct orders from President Ferdinand Marcos, raided the country's leading opposition newspaper to close it down and arrest its editor and senior staff for subversion.

Editor-publisher Jose Burgos and seven others, including several prominent opposition figures who wrote regular columns for the three-times-weekly tabloid We Forum, were placed in custody during the raid in suburban Quezon City.
