Nicaragua helicopter crash death toll reaches 84

The death toll in a helicopter crash in northern Nicaragua Dec. 9 in which 75 children were killed rose to 84 with the discovery of the bodies of nine women in the wreckage, government spokesmen said. The Miskito Indian passengers were being airlifted from their homes along the tense border with Honduras to the country's interior.

It is not known if the crash was accidental or if the helicopter was shot down by right-wing guerrillas opposed to the leftist government.

About 50,000 people rallied in Managua's central plaza Dec. 11, calling to blame the US government for the helicopter crash deaths.
