Emergency rule extended for 30 days in Guatemala

Guatemala's military government extended for another 30 days the state of siege imposed on the country by President Efrain Rios Montt last July to allow tougher action against left-wing guerrillas.

The decision to extend the state of siege, under which most civil rights have been suspended, was published in the official government gazette, which cited continued threats to social peace and public order. Just five weeks ago, General Rios Montt declared that ''the war against the subversives is already over.''
