US seen likely to grant asylum to Chinese athlete

The United States is expected to give political asylum to Chinese tennis star Hu Na. Although the commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service recommended denying political asylum to the teen-ager, the Los Angeles Times reported that the US attorney general was expected to reverse the decision. The situation is delicate, since the Communist Chinese have asked that she be returned. The newspaper reported that the US won't announce its decision until after Sunday, when House Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill and other congressmen end an official visit to China. Mr. O'Neill, meanwhile, is concerned about ties between the two countries (see Page 3).
