Tax evasion costs US $87 billion a year

The commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service said Americans evade paying taxes on about $300 billion in income every year. That costs the government about $87 billion a year, said Roscoe Egger Jr. in an interview with U.S. News & World Report magazine. And the practice of tax evasion ''has been growing and is continuing to grow,'' he said.
