CLASSICAL Rachmaninoff, Sergei: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Jean-Philippe Collard, piano. Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Michel Plasson, conductor. (Angel S-37922.) - Jean-Philippe Collard's name is none too well known on these shores, yet he is France's finest young pianist. For a while, some of his discs were being circulated on the now defunct Connoisseur Society label, and Angel has been releasing a few items now and then. This Rachmaninoff release is culled from Collard's complete set of the concertos and Paganini Rhapsody, as well as from albums of the solo piano music. His playing is superb throughout. He is not just content to dazzle with digital derring-do. He is a sensitive musician, with taste and insight far beyond his relatively few years. Perhaps Angel will continue to release the remaining concertos and much more - his Faure recordings are glorious and deserve a hearing in the United States.
