Second opera conductor leavings East Germany

A senior conductor at East Germany's state opera said he will stay in West Germany after completing a tour of Western Europe. According to the Hamburg newspaper Bild, Thomas Sanderling decided to stay for professional reasons. He would be the second major East German conductor to defect in a month. Last month the chief conductor at the Weimar Opera, Peter Gulke, decided to stay in the West after completing a concert in Hamburg.
