Court will assess tactic for catching illegal aliens
| Washington
The Supreme Court agreed to assess a federal immigration-service tactic for seeking out illegal aliens. The justices will consider an appeal of a ruling that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) use of factory sweeps to find illegal aliens violates the Constitution's guarantee against unreasonable search and seizure. The INS had stepped up use of such sweeps, especially in the garment industry, and says the lower-court ruling almost completely destroys one of its most effective enforcement techniques.
