Social security recipients who work part time after retirement may be eligible for larger monthly checks than they have been receiving. A preliminary study by the General Accounting Office said 1.4 million retirees were eligible for more than $1 billion in back benefits. The reason: Their checks did not reflect the increase caused by their postretirement employment. A social security official said corrective steps were being taken.
