Panel warns N.Y. A-plant of possible safety closure

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted unanimously to shut down New York's troubled Indian Point Atomic plant unless 288,000 nearby residents can be protected.
Operators, who will make their case at a meeting May 26, will have to prove either that deficiencies found by federal investigators no longer exist or that other conditions set by the commission can be met. The commission will make a final decision by June 9. The plant will remain in operation until that time.
