Is East German official behind fake Hitler diaries?
| London
The Hitler diaries are fakes, West German government experts said. And a senior East German official may have been behind it all, the Sunday Times said. The paper, which bought the British rights to the diaries from the West German magazine Stern and had published brief extracts, also apologized for falling for the forgeries. It said the wife of Stern reporter Gerd Heidemann, who claimed he had tracked down the diaries, had indicated the source for the documents was an East German official.
Stern magazine, meanwhile, announced the resignation of two top editors involved in the publication of the diaries.
