A Polish cardinal said a possible meeting between Pope John Paul II and former Solidarity leader Lech Walesa during the papal tour of Poland would not pose a problem.
Franciszek Cardinal Macharski, archbishop of Krakow, said he did not know whether such a meeting would take place. In Poland, meanwhile, the chairman of a local Solidarity chapter in Radom was arrested, following unofficial demonstrations to mark May Day, the banned Solidarity underground said. A bulletin circulated in Warsaw said Andrzej Sobieraj was held in connection with unofficial demonstrations at a metallurgical plant in the city.
