NAACP board strips chairman of powers
| Chicago
Board members of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) voted overwhelmingly Saturday to strip chairman Margaret Bush Wilson of all her powers. They appointed vice-chairman Kelly Alexander Sr. to assume the chairman's duties.
In doing so, the board reaffirmed its support of Benjamin Hooks as executive director of the civil rights organization.
Mrs. Wilson suspended Mr. Hooks May 18, but reinstated him May 27 under pressure from NAACP members. Mrs. Wilson remains chairwoman in title only until her term expires Dec. 31.
