New fresh-fruit frozen bar
Crushed fruit - frozen on a stick - makes one of the best frozen snacks you can find at the supermarket. A new frozen fruit bar from Shamitoff's Foods of Redwood City, Calif., contains only fresh fruit and comes in seven cool, sweet, and fruity flavors. It's good for dessert, too.
Dark sweet cherry is one of the newest flavors. Others are apple, chocolate cream coconut, pineapple, strawberry, banana, and carob-covered banana.
The bars are made of crushed or pureed fruit and a small amount of water, lightly sweetened with fructose, a natural fruit sugar. There are no artificial colorings, fillers, or preservatives.
The average freezer life of these bars is one year. The makers say they won't drip at room temperature for 30 to 35 minutes and won't break up and fall from the stick, since the natural fruit fibers tend to hold together.
One testing crew ate them too quickly to wait for the limit on dripping and was overenthusiastic about the fresh, fruity flavors.
Available in supermarkets and groceries across the country, Shamitoff bars come packed four in a box, at about 50 cents a bar.
