Sikh protests two Indian states
| New Delhi, India
Police fired plastic bullets and tear gas Monday at thousands of sword-wielding Sikhs who stormed government offices in several cities in the northern state of Punjab, officials said. Several people were injured.
A separate protest in the eastern state of Assam, where more than 4,000 people died in ethnic violence earlier this year, brought commerce and transportation to a virtual standstill, reports reaching New Delhi said.
