Thousands protest visit by US carrier to Japan
About 7,500 Japanese demonstrators Sunday protested the visit of a US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to Japan's southwestern port of Sasebo, police said.
Opponents of visits by US warships believe repeated port calls to Sasebo - which is near the Tsushima Strait that separates Japan from the Korean peninsula - could eventually result in the site becoming a front-line US nuclear base. They believe the carrier that visited Sunday, the Carl Vinson, is carrying nuclear weapons in violation of the Japanese government's principles of not possessing, making, or allowing them in the country.
