Kirkland addresses AFL-CIO delegates
The AFL-CIO's bienniel convention opened here Monday with most delegates agreeing that after the federation's decision to endorse Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale, little remains to be done.
President Lane Kirkland stirred delegates with renewed attacks on President Reagan, his administration, and the ''retarded right,'' which he said are working together against ''free trade unionism that has brought with it the democratization of privilege - that is to say, of education, leisure, travel, good health and housing, and other advantages for centuries reserved for the few - to an extent previously unknown in recorded history.'' However, delegates rose to their feet when Kirkland compared Mondale to the late Hubert Humphrey and Henry Jackson.
