Suriname government says it snuffed new try at coup
The left-wing government in Suriname said Tuesday it had foiled a coup attempt, the Dutch news agency ANP reported. The agency quoted its correspondent in Paramaribo, capital of the former Dutch colony in South America, as saying the government had called a press conference about the coup attempt but gave no further details.
The military ruler, Lt. Col. Desi Bouterse, has twice before announced foiled coup attempts, last Dec. 25 and Jan. 30. Government opponents have charged that the pretext of coup attempts was used to kill or arrest people opposed to Bouterse's rule.
