Walesa asks West to lift its sanctions

Solidarity leader Lech Walesa appealed to the West Monday to lift economic sanctions imposed on Poland in retaliation for the Communist authorities' 1981 crackdown on the free trade union.

Mr. Walesa said the sanctions had been a propaganda success but that continuing them could cause the country serious economic damage.
