Anti-Marcos coalition to boycott spring election
The newly formed Nationalist Alliance opposition Saturday announced a boycott of the Philippines' National Assembly election in May, saying the exercise is a farce that will not diminish President Marcos's powers.
The alliance of political, student, peasant, and religious groups labeled the election as ''an attempt to deceive the public into believing democratic processes have been returned.'' The United Nationalist Democratic Organization, a 12-party coalition, still has to announce its position on the election.
