Increase in bread price prompts Tunisian riots

President Habib Bourguiba declared a state of emergency across Tunisia Tuesday, imposing a dust-to-dawn curfew and banning public meetings in response to rioting over food price increases.

The president's statement also said security forces were authorized to open fire on any person failing to obey orders to submit to an identify check.

Hundreds of youths, angered at the doubling of bread prices, rioted in the streets here Tuesday. Army troops were ordered into Tunis to maintain order.
