Nicaragua says it will hold elections in 1985
Nicaragua announced Saturday that elections for president, vice-president and a 90-member constituent assembly will be held next year. The statement was an apparent response to strong pressure at home and abroad for a return to democracy.
President of the Council of State, Cmdr. Carlos Nunez, issuing the most details so far of the Marxist government's election plans, said the ballot will be secret and direct, with a voting age set at 18. He said representatives from the United Nations, the Contadora peace group, and three international political groups will be invited to oversee the elections.
