Hurried 'Jenufa'; harried 'Division'; luminous Leontyne; 'Freischutz'

Leontyne Price soars Leontyne Price, who sang in Worcester's Mechanics Hall last Sunday night, has a voice that flows like liquid gold.

It soared as she treated the audience to a broad selection of operatic music. Her French songs, as well as the aria ''Un bel dei'' from Puccini's ''Madama Butterfly,'' showcased that voice better than the German pieces she sang.

In particular, ''Oh! quand je dors'' and ''Comment, disaient-ils,'' by Franz Liszt, showed off the clarity and brilliance of her high notes and the warmth of her low notes.

Yet it was the spirituals at the end of the program which most inspired the audience. ''Witness'' and ''Ride on King Jesus'' left the audience wanting more.

In fact, as Miss Price returned to the stage to sing her third encore (her first two had been Italian arias), a voice from the crowd shouted out, ''Sing a Negro spiritual!'' Not a singer to disappoint a hungry audience, she responded with an effortless rendition of ''This little light of mine'' and the rich, warm tones of ''Summertime,'' from Gershwin's ''Porgy and Bess.''
