Church wins court fight over damage to building
A jury has awarded $4 million to the century-old Trinity Church in a lawsuit against John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company contending its 60-story skyscraper cracked the church's foundation and stained glass. Court officials estimated another $4 million in interest will be added to the verdict, which came nine years after the Episcopal church, a National Historic Landmark, filed its suit in 1975.
The church's suit alleged the company should have been aware that a 140-foot deep excavation for the 798-foot tower created a major damage risk for the church and other nearby buildings.
