Boston longshoremen going back to work
Boston longshoremen approved a new three-year contract Wednesday and agreed to end their 13-day strike, union and management officials said. Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Del., and Boston went on strike Feb. 10. Boston's longshoremen were the last to return to work.
The settlement between three locals of the International Longshoremen's Association and the Boston Shipping Association will cost shippers a doubled assessment of $2 per ton of cargo.
The higher assessment will finance the longshoremen's Guaranteed Annual Income Fund, which had been the sticking point in negotiations.
