Salvadorean leftists blame troops after train ambush
Salvadorean leftist guerrillas claimed responsibility for Tuesday's ambush of a train convoy - but blamed government soldiers for the civilian casualties. Radio Venceremos, the voice of the five left-wing guerrilla groups here, said the rebels attacked a train 25 miles north of the capital. They said the train was carrying soldiers.
The guerrillas exchanged fire with the soldiers until another train, carrying civilian passengers, arrived, the radio said.
The government soldiers then moved into the passenger car of the second train to use passengers as a shield as the fighting continued in what Radio Venceremos said was ''a cowardly act.'' Ten civilians were killed.
The statement conflicted with reports from survivors of the raid.
