Idaho congressman found guilty in ethics case
A federal court jury found Rep. George Hansen (R) of Idaho guilty Monday on all four counts of filing false financial statements by omitting an $87,000 silver profit and loans involving Texas billionaire Nelson Bunker Hunt.
Mr. Hansen was the first congressman convicted under the Ethics in Government Act of 1978. He was convicted in 1975 of election law violations.
The Idaho legislator could receive a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine on each of four counts.
Hansen's lawyer, Nathan Lewin, said he would ask for a new trial on grounds errors were made in the proceedings.
