Yale averts strike by support staff

A strike by 2,600 clerical and technical workers at Yale University which threatened to bring the Ivy League campus's activities to a halt was narrowly averted Tuesday night.

Hours before a strike deadline, the university made a surprise three-year contract offer, and union members voted to accept the settlement overwhelmingly.

Some 80 percent of the clerical and technical workers are women. Union supporters had argued that its members were underpaid.
