US vetoes UN resolution on Nicaraguan port mining
The United States vetoed a resolution submitted by Nicaragua to the United Nations Security Council which essentially condemned the mining of its ports by US covertly supported ''contras'' as a flagrant violation of the freedom of navigation, Monitor contributor Louis Wiznitzer reports. The resolution was supported by 13 members of the Council. Britain abstained.
The US claimed the resolution was unbalanced and failed to take into account Nicaragua's efforts to export revolution. The Nicaraguan representative said the US veto confirmed the US determination to destabilize its government.
