Olympics will be fair to all, US tells Soviets

US Olympic officials have denied Soviet accusations that the United States has violated the Olympic Charter, saying Russian athletes will be treated as fairly as athletes from every other country.

In Washington, State Department spokesman John Hughes also said the Soviets have nothing to fear. ''The United States as host government will uphold its responsibilities in all respects,'' he said, ''and that includes permitting athletes from all countries unhindered entry if they are properly accredited by the (IOC).''

The Soviet National Olympic Committee called Tuesday for an emergency meeting of the International Olympic Committee to review what it charged were ''gross violations'' of the Olympic Charter by the US.
