British say Libyan safe stocked with ammunition

British police said Thursday they discovered thousands of rounds of ammunition in a safe in the abandoned Libyan embassy, which was evacuated last week to end an 11-day siege there.

A Scotland Yard spokesman who refused to give his name said that late Wednesday police cracked a safe in one of the Georgian mansion's 70 rooms and discovered 3,600 rounds of .32-caliber ammunition.

Earlier in their search, they found seven pistols, eight flak jackets, and clips and accessories for submachine guns, Scotland Yard said.

Adel Sembawa, counselor at the Saudi Embassy, has been serving as an observer during the police search.
