Duarte vows to end death squads, abuses
Christian Democrat Jose Napoleon Duarte, claiming victory in the presidential election in El Salvador, vowed Monday to crush death squads and to put an end to human rights abuses.
''We will create a special presidential commission to track down, investigate , and prosecute all those found to be involved in the death squads,'' the moderate candidate told a press conference.
Mr. Duarte also said that he would welcome American aid but that he would never let foreign combat troops fight the leftist rebels.
Official results of the US-sponsored runoff elections are expected to be released today. ARENA candidate Roberto d'Aubuisson said the results would be so close that whichever party won would have to accept the other as a potent political force.
