Secretary-General plans to visit Mideast in June
United Nations Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar is preparing to visit the Middle East in June. His trip will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, Monitor contributor Louis Wiznitzer reports.
Although he has ideas on how to approach the various diplomatic chasms in the Middle East, the UN chief will carry no formula with him and will mainly listen to the leaders with whom he meets, he told the Monitor.
Mr. Perez de Cuellar feels that in the aftermath of the recent Lebanese crisis, and with no diplomatic initiative in sight this year, the Middle Eastern powder keg might explode. He hopes his trip will at least somewhat fill the present diplomatic void.
