Gandhi sends the Army into troubled Punjab State

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi deployed three brigades of about 4,000 soldiers each into the troubled Punjab State on Saturday. She declared the Punjab a restricted area under India's Foreigner's Act. Under the act, no foreigners, including journalists, can enter or remain in the state without a special permit from the home ministry.

Mrs. Gandhi appealed to Sikhs to call off their campaign for autonomy.
