CAB reverses decision on airborne smoking ban

A majority of the Civil Aeronautics Board wants to ban smoking on short-distance airline flights, but CAB chairman Dan McKinnon said Thursday the idea was being abandoned because airlines might try to skirt the rules and cause massive scheduling and air-traffic problems.

Only hours earlier, the CAB had tentatively approved a ban on smoking on all commercial flights of two hours or less.
