US religious leaders urge Dutch to reject missiles
A group of US religious leaders urged the Dutch government Wednesday to reject outright the basing of cruise missiles in the Netherlands rather than delay a decision until next year. They made the appeal to Ambassador Richard Fein at the Dutch Embassy in Washington.
''We want the parliament to reject it. It's time for some nation to break ranks'' with the rest of the NATO alliance and refuse to accept the new intermediate-range missiles, Stephen Cary, chairman of the American Friends Service Committee, said.
The US religious leaders represented Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist, Roman Catholic, and other churches. All praised the Dutch people for so firmly questioning and opposing the missile deployment that their government was forced to devise a compromise prossal.
