O'Neill to set up panel on Jackson complaints
House Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill met with the Rev. Jesse Jackson on Tuesday and agreed to set up a special congressional panel to examine Mr. Jackson's complaints about the Democratic Party's delegate selection rules. But Mr. O'Neill told reporters he was not convinced the rules are unfair.
''It all depends on how you look at it,'' he said. ''Every type of a process you have out there affects somebody in a negative manner. There will always be some kind of complaint.''
In addition to challenging various voting procedures as being unfair, the Rev. Mr. Jackson has argued that application of party rules left him with 7 percent of the total number of delegates although he claims 21 percent of the popular vote.
''As far as I am concnerned, I am a victim of unfair treatment,'' he said after the meeting with O'Neill.
