McGovern: Hart effort could reelect Reagan
Former Sen. George McGovern, the 1972 presidential nominee, cautioned Tuesday that continuing efforts by Sen. Gary Hart to wrest the Democratic nomination from Walter Mondale could hand President Reagan a victory in November.
''He (Hart) obviously has an enormous stake in this. I understand his having difficulty letting go of the prize,'' Mr. McGovern told reporters after testifying before the concluding session of the Democratic platform committee.
McGovern, who received a standing ovation from platform writers, testified that the ''highest priority'' of the party's 1984 nominee should be to call for a resumption of ''wide-ranging negotiations with the Soviet leadership.''
