Boston Pops orchestra losing its conductor

Oscar-winning composer John Williams has resigned as conductor of the Boston Pops, effective July 8, because of ''artistic and creative differences,'' the orchestra announced Wednesday.

The conductor had angrily left a recent rehearsal and told Pops general manager Thomas W. Morris he was fed up with the players' behavior and attitude, the Boston Globe reported. The newspaper said some of the players are reportedly careless and indifferent and display their boredom during the Pops season by talking and reading while other musicians play.

Mr. Williams joined the Pops in January of 1980, succeeding Arthur Fiedler, who had led the orchestra for 50 years. Williams is most widely known for composing the scores for such blockbuster movies as the ''Star Wars'' trilogy, ''E.T.'', ''Superman,'' ''Raiders of the Lost Ark,'' and ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.''
