End strike, British coal chairman asks miners
The chairman of the state-run National Coal Board has appealed to miners to end Britain's 102-day-old coal strike. Coal board chairman Ian MacGregor, in a letter sent to the home of every British miner, asked them to ''end the tragic violence and pressures'' of mass picket lines and return to work.
MacGregor warned that Arthur Scargill, the Marxist leader of the National Union of Mineworkers, could carry the strike on into December. ''Everybody will lose - and lose disastrously,'' MacGregor said.
In another development, Queen Elizabeth II canceled a planned June 28 visit to Yorkshire's new Selby mine. The mine has been a regular target of as many as 1,000 pickets.
