Nigeria jails ex-official for misusing $24 million
A former Nigerian state governor has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for misappropriating $24 million, Lagos Radio said Monday. Solomon Lar, former governor of Plateau State, drew the maximum penalty Sunday after being found guilty of appropriating 32.7 million naira ($24.59 million) for public security needs, but only accounting for the equivalent of $ 576,845, according to the broadcast, monitored in London.
Brigadier Peter Adomokhai, chairman of the special military tribunal set up to try officials accused of corruption, delivered judgment in the central Nigerian city of Jos, saying Mr. Lar had diverted the funds while in office between 1979 and 1983.
