Andropov's son is named ambassador to Greece
The Soviet Union has officially requested the appointment of Igor Andropov, son of the late Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, as ambassador to Greece, a government spokeman said Monday. ''The request is being studied by the government, but such applications are usually accepted,'' Dimitris Maroudas told reporters.
Mr. Andropov was promoted to the rank of ambassador in June while serving as deputy leader of the Soviet delegation to the East-West disarmament conference in Stockholm. The post is considered important because of Greece's NATO membership and its small but influential pro-Moscow Communist Party.
