Iraq says it shot down Iranian jet a long border

Iraqi air defense units shot down an Iranian jet fighter Tuesday in the southern sector of the border area, an Iraqi military spokesman said over the state radio. There was no independent confirmation of the claim.

In another development, Arab officials and diplomatic sources said Monday that Iran has proposed a regional conference to keep the Iran-Iraq war in check. They said the Iranian suggestion is being considered by Saudi Arabia and its five allies in the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qater, and Oman.
