4 key opposition leaders included in Polish amnesty

Poland's communist authorities will include four prominent opposition leaders in an amnesty for political prisoners to be declared this weekend, Western diplomats said Thursday.

They quoted Polish sources who have seen a draft of the amnesty bill, which marks the 40th anniversary of communist rule in Poland. The trial of the four on charges of plotting to overthrow the state was halted Wednesday until the parliament decided how broad the amnesty should be.

One of the four, Jacek Kuron, called for Poles to form cells of resistance to topple the regime, but warned that violence could result in a Soviet invasion, his son said yesterday.
