French finance minister to take EC presidency

France's outgoing economy and finance minister, Jacques Delors, was named Thursday as the new president of the European Commission, which administers the troubled European Community.

The forceful Mr. Delors will take over the job of managing the day-to-day affairs of the Community from Luxembourg's Gaston Thorn, whose term expires at the end of this year.

He will be the eighth president since the Community was formed in 1958, and is expected to take office formally on Jan. 6.
